Breast Reduction

Many women struggle with breasts that are far too large for their bodies and bring a host of physical and emotional problems. Breast reduction surgery makes it possible to reshape the breasts and create a more balanced, proportioned figure.

The Procedure

Breast reduction surgery varies in what needs to be done for the individual patient. The basic procedure requires incisions through which the excess skin, fat, and tissue is removed and the remaining breast tissue reshaped and lifted. If your breasts are saggy, the incisions are frequently placed vertically on the underside of the breasts and around the areola.

Some patients who want only a very moderate reduction in breast size may be candidates for breast reduction with liposuction. When incisions are required, they will be either vertical or what is termed an "anchor" incision, which is three incisions: one vertical, one around the areola, and one in the breast crease. Once healed, the incision scars are not visible in revealing clothing. The nipples will be repositioned in a more attractive location on the breasts and stretched areolas can be made smaller when needed.

Breast Reduction Surgery: Reshaping Breast Tissue

Women who have over large, heavy breasts often dream of having a trimmer upper body. When nature has given you larger breasts, it can be embarrassing, uncomfortable, and make it impossible to engage in certain types of activities – or find clothing that fits. Some of the most common problems that women with overlarge breasts face include:

  • Discomfort during physical exercise

  • Difficulty finding clothing that fits

  • Back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Shoulder pain

  • Bra straps dig into shoulders

  • Rashes

  • Asymmetrical breasts

  • Fungal infections

  • Bad posture

  • Emotional distress

The Day of Surgery

A breast reduction surgery is a customized procedure. Every patient at University Plastic Surgeons will be fully informed about what to expect, aftercare instructions, and healing time. The surgery is usually performed on an out-patient basis, under general anesthesia or with intravenous sedation for patient comfort. Plan to have a friend or family member drive you home and stay with you for the first night.
