What is nerve regeneration?

The body has an amazing ability to heal itself, but only under certain conditions. When the nerves have been damaged, the body may need help to trigger natural regeneration. At University Plastic Surgeons, we offer our patients state-of-the-art, Memphis nerve regeneration treatments.

Throughout life, it is not uncommon for some peripheral nerve to be injured. Under normal circumstances, the body gets to work repairing a damaged nerve. A specific type of cell, called Schwann cells, produce the nerve’s protection, called the myelin sheath. After a nerve injury, the nerve fiber affected (called an axon), may be unable to send messages to the extremities. These axons will regenerate if the damage is not too extreme or the nerve not severed, and then covered again with the myelin sheath generated by the Schwann cells. These cells are highly effective but may not be able to restore protection to the entire nerve.

Plasma exchange: Plasma exchange essentially “cleans” your blood. Certain blood components are replaced with plasma from a donor. This treatment has been found to be effective for some neurological diseases.
